Acne scars are nearly as common as the skin condition itself. Since acne often shows up on some of the most visible areas of the body, such as the face and neck, it’s no wonder that millions of people are looking for a way to stop breakouts and erase the evidence of acne scars. We all know about over-the-counter creams and washes, and the more serious prescription topicals and medications. But what can our office do to help you alleviate the appearance of these troublesome blemishes?

1. Preventative Treatment

The first and foremost step in learning how to treat acne scars is prevention. You can put a great deal of effort into treating existing scars, only to wind up with more down the line because the culprit, active acne, inevitably reappears.

Maintaining healthy skin can prevent and eliminate the acne vulgaris that leads to the scars forming. Not all skincare is created equal, however. It is vital to treat skin with only quality and effective products, such as the Obagi skin care system, which we carry in the office here at the BCFPS. Once the existing acne is cleared, it’s time to address scarring.

2. RF Microneedling

Our most effective treatment for acne is Morpheus8 Radiofrequency Remodeling, which utilizes radiofrequency (RF) energy to stimulate the skin’s collagen production and natural healing process to produce a firmer, more even complexion. This treatment is better than other RF options because it first opens up the skin through microneedling, allowing the RF energy to penetrate deeper into the dermis. Microneedling further encourages your body’s healing response, for even greater collagen production. One of the other great things about Morpheus8 is that, unlike more aggressive resurfacing treatments, it can safely be used to treat all skin types and tones.

In some cases, we can pair Morpheus8 with IPL (intense pulsed light) acne treatments. This combined approach can be highly effective in reducing active acne and clearing previous acne scars. We can evaluate your complexion and let you know which of the skin rejuvenation treatments we offer is likely to work best for you.

3. Dermal Fillers

Since scar revision often requires the use of more than one technique, pairing injectable fillers with Morpheus8 treatments can more effectively hide a scar. Fillers can also be a great standalone option for those with atrophic scars, or scars that occur when the skin cannot heal properly, and healing instead occurs underneath the normal layer of skin tissue, resulting in uneven skin surface texture. Since dermal fillers are designed to restore lost volume, they can be ideal for fixing the textural flaws caused by acne scars.
