When to Consider Laser Hair Removal
The most common reasons people seek hair removal are:
- Having excess or embarrassing body hair
- Having unwanted hair on areas of the face
- Wanting to minimize shaving in areas such as the legs or armpits
Before Getting Laser Hair Removal
With just a bit of preparation, you can enjoy excellent hair removal results. You should shave the treatment area within 24 hours of your appointment. Do not wax or tweeze the area – the laser treatment requires the root of the hairs to be present. You should also avoid exposing the treated area to sun at least 2 weeks before treatment, avoid any other skin treatments such as a chemical peel or microdermabrasion, and also avoid topical products such as salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide that cause photosensitivity. Make sure to follow the complete pre-treatment list we will provide at your consultation.
Your Laser Hair Removal Procedure
We perform laser hair removal on an outpatient basis, meaning you will go home the same day and will not need to spend time in a hospital.
The diode laser we use has a longer wavelength compared to other laser technologies, which allows the laser light to penetrate deeper within the skin. This enables us to treat coarse hair and also increases treatment effectiveness for people with darker skin tones.
While the treatment is almost painless, we can administer a topical numbing cream to increase comfort. The laser device is then passed over the area being targeted for hair removal. Treatment time is quick, and will depend on the size of the treatment area. Large areas such as the legs may take an hour or more.

After Your Laser Hair Removal Treatment
Once treatment is completed, the treated area will look the same as it did when you came into the office. The difference is that treated hairs will gradually fall out over the coming days and weeks, and the affected follicles will not regrow new hair.
You may see mild swelling or redness in the treated area for the first few hours, but you should not have any lasting discomfort. It is important to continue to avoid sun exposure on the treated area, and to keep the area clean and the skin healthy with gentle cleansers and lotions.
Compared to other types of laser hair removal, diode laser treatments require fewer sessions to achieve optimal hair reduction. The exact number of treatments will depend on your existing anatomy and your goals. We can estimate the number of treatments you will need at your initial consultation.
