Erbium Laser Skin Resurfacing
Our skin is affected by pretty much everything it comes into contact with. From pollution to UV rays and even the products we put on it, our skin withstands a lot, and the effects of these exposures accumulate.
At our office near Boston Common, Erbium laser skin resurfacing is a popular option to enhance the look of the skin by eliminating the outermost damaged layers to reveal the healthier, younger skin beneath and encourage the growth of newer, healthier cells. We are able to focus treatments to avoid injury to the surrounding tissues, removing the targeted lines and wrinkles while causing minimal to no side effects.

When to Consider Erbium Laser Skin Resurfacing
The most common reasons to get Erbium laser skin resurfacing include:
- Reducing fine lines and wrinkles
- Fading or eliminating brown spots, redness and discoloration
- Tightening lax skin by stimulating collagen formation
- Reducing the visibility of scars
- Lessening the appearance of some blood vessels
- Making enlarged pores smaller
Before Your Erbium Laser Skin Resurfacing
For at least 4 weeks before your treatment, you need to avoid UV exposure and wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen every day. Do not get any other skin treatments done in the month before your appointment. You will also need to eliminate the use of medications that cause photosensitivity, as these can cause a severe reaction to the laser. It is important to disclose any acne medication you are on as this may need to be discontinued.
If you have a history of cold sores anywhere on the body or shingles in the area being treated, please inform us so you can be put on antiviral medication for at least two days before your session. We may also ask that you apply certain products to prepare your skin for treatment.
Your Erbium Laser Skin Resurfacing
Laser skin resurfacing is an outpatient procedure that we perform in our office. Local anesthetic is used to ensure the procedure is not painful, and depending on your circumstances, an oral relaxing medication might also be used.
The length of treatment varies depending on the area being treated. For example, if just the forehead is being targeted, your session may last as little as 30 minutes. If the full face, neck and upper chest are being treated, your appointment may last more than 2 hours.
Once the procedure itself is complete, a non-stick dressing will be applied. Our staff will walk you through the recovery process and the steps you need to take to ensure your skin heals correctly.

After Your Erbium Laser Skin Resurfacing
Expect your skin to be red and sensitive directly after treatment. Most people report that the sensation is similar to a sunburn: somewhat sore, occasional stinging sensations and some itching as the skin heals.
About 5 to 7 days after your session, you should notice your skin is dry and starting to peel. Once this old skin peels away, you’ll notice pink skin underneath. Over the coming weeks, this will change to your natural skin color.
You’ll need to take special steps to encourage healthy healing, such as cleansing the treatment area with specific products and taking steps to reduce swelling. We will go over all steps with you to ensure you understand and to customize them for your needs.
