How Laser Skin Resurfacing Works to Improve Your Skin

Laser skin treatments are now some of the most popular cosmetic treatments available, thanks to their versatility and proven results.

If you’re curious about how laser skin resurfacing works and if it could be right for you, here are a few things you should know about your options and treatment timeline.

Ablative vs. Nonablative Lasers

There are two main types of laser skin resurfacing: ablative and nonablative. Ablative lasers work by removing the outer layer of skin to help stimulate the tissue renewal process and reveal the smooth, fresh layer of skin underneath.

Nonablative lasers work by heating the underlying layers of skin without removing the outer layer. This process can help stimulate collagen production, making it an effective anti-aging treatment option. Nonablative lasers can also be used to address pigmentation issues such as redness and melasma.

Multiple Treatments May Be Necessary

Depending on the type of laser and the severity of your skin concerns, more than one laser skin treatment may be necessary in order to see optimal results. This is especially true of many nonablative lasers, as they are gentler and usually don’t require downtime.

Some Downtime May Be Required

While most nonablative lasers require little to no downtime, ablative lasers will require that you take anywhere from a few days to 2 weeks off your normal routine. Discuss your treatment and recovery timeline with your plastic surgeon during your consultation so you know just what to expect after your laser skin resurfacing treatment.
